Values
Honesty and respect are very important to me. I think it is important to communicate with students in a very honest manner, and not to make promises that I cannot keep. I also believe that it is very important to treat teenagers with respect. They want to be treated like adults, so we need to give them the credit that they so desire and talk about more adult problems. I like to talk about common BC issues such as pipelines and mining in my classrooms.
HONESTY + RESPECT
Trauma informed practice is an essential quality of a modern day teacher. We have no idea what kids go through on a day-to-day basis when kids go home. It is up to us as educators to pick up on these signals, and provide a safe and consistent environment for the students who truly need it. Accommodation and fostering genuine relationships with students are very important in modern classrooms.
TRAUMA INFORMED
I personally believe that all learners should feel included and confident in what the class is learning. I do this in my classroom by differentiating student learning. I give more basis or more advanced practice questions depending on where they are at in their confidence with the content. I also like to include games in my classroom, such as Periodic Table Battleship. It's a fun way to learn!
INCLUSIVE TO ALL
Goals
I have achieved this goal! I start teaching in my own class on April 8th. I would like to really use this opportunity to build relationships with my students, and to continue practicing and developing my pedagogy and abilities as a teacher and apply my previous knowledge to classes that I have never taught before!
Obtain a teaching contract with SD57 so that I can build a classroom community.
TEACH
To me, learning is all about skills. I would like to continue working on how to best assess skills and qualities required (such as problem solving) to complete various Science/Math courses. Keeping students and their families frequently informed about progress is essential to communicating student learning.
Involve both students and parents in the process of assessment. Students need to have ownership of their knowledge.
