Standard 4: Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families and communities in schools.

While on my first practicum, I sent home an 'About Me' letter for parents and students to read. On practicum 2 and 3, I sent home progress reports via email to parents and posted daily to my website for parents to see what their child was up to in Science 10 and Science 8. On my website, I included the Big Ideas for the course, and I posted supplemental resources for students and parents to use if they wanted more clarification on a topic when they were at home. I decided to post more frequently to my teacher twitter page, which resulted in a few of my students' parents following my posts. I also participated in both Parent Teacher Nights at CHSS. I had students do a self assessment and showed their parents at Parent Teacher Night. I think that this self assessment was very powerful because it showed how students saw themselves, and where they felt they were at with their class so far. A few students were very hard on themselves, and I think it was good for parents to understand this. A lot of the students were involved in the Parent Teacher meetings and I thought it was very effective because they could justify why they assessed themselves the way that they did. Another way that I involved community support was by dressing up for CHSS Halloween Spirit Week with the Science/Math Department. We dressed up as "Where's Waldo?" as a group and a few of us also dressed up for Spirit Week to encourage the students to dress up too and to form a sense of school pride and community.

Another big way that I involve communities and parents is my coaching. I was the co-coach of the KRSS Senior Girls volleyball team for two years. We attended zones for two seasons, and attended AAA Provincial Championships in our last season. I also helped co-coach the CHSS Grade 8 Boys volleyball team while I was on practicum there. Highlights were placing 3rd at the Duchess Park Tournament and the District Finals. The Cedars coach made a comment to me about how much our team had improved over the years and how she was blown away! I was very proud.
