Coaching and Sportsmanship
As a volleyball player and coach, we are required to be ethical and honest in order to demonstrate sportsmanship on the court. I have received training for Making Ethical Decisions in Sport and Making Headway in Sport: Concussion training. No matter how good one of your players are, if they demonstrate signs of a concussion, they must be removed from play so that they do not do any further damage to their head. This alone requires a lot of ethics in volleyball. We also had to talk a lot about different legal issues with coaching, and when/how to report an ethical concern. On the Gr. 8 Boys Volleyball team that I coach, we had an issue about students bullying or bugging other players when they made mistakes. I did my best to address this problem right away and to encourage a stronger sense of sportsmanship with the team.
As a Bachelor of Education student, I have done my best to follow the TRB ethics standards by addressing any concerns that I have directly with the individual involved. I feel that I am a strong advocate in my cohort and I am comfortable sitting down with my peers and being 100% candid and honest with them if needed. Whenever I have concerns, I feel that I address them in an ethical, empathetic and respectful manner. I enjoy working with groups and with others of differing opinions and backgrounds. Although I dislike confrontation, I find that when necessary I handle it maturely and appropriately. I have continued this while on practicum, and ensured that my behaviour with all involved was professional and respectful.
